The effects of climate change are already noticeable in our region. Heavy rainfall, heat and drought periods, as well as severe weather events with floods, hail, and storms have repeatedly hit our community of Gründau in recent years. With climate change progressing, these extreme weather events are further increasing – in both their frequency and their intensity and duration.
To actively address these challenges, the city of Gelnhausen, the municipality of Gründau, and the municipality of Linsengericht have established an intermunicipal cooperation (IKZ).
The goal is to develop a climate adaptation strategy that
By implementing targeted measures, systematic and comprehensive prevention is to be ensured – for the protection of life, health, and livelihoods.
On September 1, 2025, the two-year Climate Adaptation Strategy project was launched, which is funded by Federal Ministry for the Environment BMUKN sponsored is being developed. Working closely with citizens, local stakeholders, specialized administrations, and political decision-makers, a comprehensive climate adaptation roadmap is being created. The strategy will serve as a guide for future measures and as a basis for applying for funding at the state and federal levels.

The concept includes an inventory of climate and extreme weather risks, an analysis of vulnerability and hotspots in our area, the development of an overall strategy for how we deal with them, the involvement of relevant stakeholders, the creation of a catalog of measures with adaptation measures, as well as the planning of controlling (auditing mechanisms and monitoring the effectiveness of adaptation measures), embedding within the administration, and public relations.
We can all directly benefit from climate adaptation. Climate adaptation measures protect our health, for example, by cities creating more green spaces, shaded areas, and drinking water fountains to reduce heat stress. This also increases the quality of life and livability. Climate adaptation measures also increase our safety through flood protection and early warning systems for extreme weather. Furthermore, climate adaptation can reduce costs in the long term by reducing expensive damage to buildings and infrastructure and ensuring food security through adaptation measures. Good climate adaptation ensures that we can live safely, healthily, and comfortably despite climate change.
Join in
As part of the climate adaptation concept, we cordially invite you to the kick-off event „Together for Climate Impact Adaptation and Protection Against Extreme Weather!“ This will take place on February 4, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Willi-Bechtold-Halle. There, we will provide an initial insight into the creation of the climate adaptation concept. It's not just about information, but about co-creation! Your ideas, your questions, and your perspectives are crucial in developing a concept that makes our home resilient. Let us take responsibility together and secure the future of our region. We look forward to your participation and a constructive exchange!
