Applying for a passport abroad

If you live abroad, you can apply for your German passport in person at a German diplomatic mission abroad or, in some countries, also with an honorary consul.

Description

If you are a German citizen and live abroad, you can apply for your passport at the German diplomatic mission abroad responsible for you. The German diplomatic mission abroad in whose consular district you reside permanently is generally responsible for issuing passports abroad.

However, a few diplomatic missions and consular posts do not perform passport authority tasks. Please check the website of the diplomatic mission or consular post responsible for your place of residence.

To save you long travel distances, some honorary consular officers also offer, for an additional fee, to accept passport applications and forward them to the responsible foreign mission.

If there are important reasons, you can also visit another foreign mission that is not locally responsible. In principle, you must apply for the passport in person.

Procedure

You must apply for your passport in person:

  • Schedule an appointment at the foreign mission.
  • Fill out the application form in advance as much as possible. Do not sign the application form until your in-person appointment.
  • Bring all required documents to the scheduled appointment.
  • You generally have to appear in person to submit your application, identify yourself, and provide your fingerprints.
  • For the application, the submission of fingerprints for storage in the biometric passport is legally mandatory from the age of six:
    • For this, a flat print of usually the left and right index fingers is taken.  
    • Children under 6 years of age do not have to provide a fingerprint.
  • When the passport is ready, it will be mailed to you, provided you arranged this when applying, or you will be notified by phone or email that your passport is ready for pickup.

  • Additional costs of EUR 32.00

  • Additional costs of EUR 22.00

Passport with 48 pages and via express ordering procedure

  • Additional costs of EUR 22.00 and EUR 32.00

When applying abroad with honorary consuls, the costs listed above apply:

  • plus a fee for the services of the honorary consul of 73.13 EUR to 88.43 EUR. The fee depends on the regional assignment of the responsible foreign mission.
  • plus the reimbursement of expenses (for example, costs for postage and business travel)

A fee reduction or exemption is possible in cases of financial need.
