Support for students with special difficulties in reading, spelling, and arithmetic

The entitlement to special educational support is revoked by the competent authority as soon as the conditions are met.

A good education is one of the most important prerequisites for children to be able to develop according to their abilities. A well-structured school system that does justice to the diverse interests and developments of the students, as well as various support measures, serve this purpose.

Students with special difficulties in reading, spelling, or arithmetic are entitled to individual support in all school types: schools are obligated to implement support measures. The basis for this is the Sixth Section of the „Regulation on the Organization of School Relationships.“ The goal of support is to overcome these difficulties as much as possible. Diagnosis and counseling play a significant role in this process. An individual support plan is created for children and adolescents experiencing such difficulties. Cooperation between the school and the parents is an important prerequisite for successful assistance.

The procedure for determining special educational needs takes place in several steps:

• The school informs you of the suspicion of a special educational needs requirement and advises you on how to proceed.
• Upon application by the legal guardians or with their consent, the school initiates the procedure.
• Specialists in special needs education conduct educational diagnostics. In the process, your child's learning development, developmental prerequisites, and support needs are examined.
• The results are summarized in an expert report.
• The responsible school supervision authority reviews the documents and decides whether a special educational needs status is determined and which focus area applies.
• You will receive a written notice of the decision.

The procedure concludes with the determination or rejection of a special educational needs status.
