The KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) has transferred your education loan to the Federal Office of Administration (BVA), which is now demanding repayment. If you are unable to pay the due amount in full immediately, you can apply for a payment postponement under certain conditions.
You generally have to repay your education loan in monthly installments to the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). Interest is charged on the loan. You can repay the loan in full or in part at any time before maturity without any additional costs or fees.
If you are temporarily unable to pay your monthly installments, you can apply for a deferral from KfW. In justified cases, KfW can grant you a deferral of up to 24 months.
If you do not pay and do not submit an application for deferral, default interest will accrue. The KfW will call upon the federal guarantee for the educational loan, in particular, if you fall into arrears for more than 6 months and have not submitted an application for deferral, or if the KfW cannot approve your application for deferral. In that case, the federal government will first pay the outstanding loan amount as well as accrued interest and costs to the KfW.
KfW is transferring the further processing of your repayment to the Federal Office of Administration (BVA). The BVA will request you in a demand notice to pay the still outstanding amounts, such as the loan amount, interest, and costs, to the BVA.
You must pay the outstanding amounts in one lump sum. If you are financially unable to do so, you can apply for a payment deferral with the BVA. If you do not pay the amount owed by the deadline and have not applied for a deferral, you will have to pay late payment interest. Late payment interest can also accrue if the BVA cannot process your deferral application further due to missing information.
As a rule, you repay an educational loan to the KfW bank. If you are unable to pay the installments to KfW in full or in part, KfW can grant you a deferral for up to 24 months in certain cases.
In certain cases, KfW will forward your case to the Federal Office of Administration (BVA) for further processing.
You can then apply for a deferral of the education loan repayment by mail or fax to the BVA.
You can apply for a deferral up to the date stated in the recovery notice. If you apply for the deferral later, you will be in default.
If a deferral is granted, you will find the new individual payment deadlines in your notice.
For the deferral period, deferral interest is generally charged at a rate of 2 percentage points above the applicable base rate published by the Deutsche Bundesbank. The deferral interest is only assessed by official notice after the deferral period has ended. In the case of deferral with monthly installment payments, the interest is due monthly and is already included in the respective deferral installment.
