Quick info

If you receive basic income support and want to improve your chances on the labor market, the job center can assign you a work opportunity.

Description

Have you been unemployed for some time, possibly with health restrictions, and want to get back on your feet professionally? As a recipient of basic income support, a work opportunity allows you to perform an activity that prepares you for employment in the labor market.

When you pursue a work opportunity, you receive a so-called extra expense allowance in addition to your basic security benefit. This is intended to compensate for expenses incurred by you as a result of the work opportunity.

Additional expenses include, in particular, travel costs or work clothing. If you receive benefits in kind from the sponsor, such as a monthly travel pass, the additional expense allowance will be reduced by the corresponding amount. If you additionally receive cash benefits from the sponsor, these are considered income. In that case, you will receive less basic security benefit.

Providers of work opportunities include, for example

  • educational institution
  • charitable organizations
  • public-benefit corporations
  • non-profit organizations

A work opportunity usually lasts up to 24 months and can be extended by up to 12 months.

The Jobcenter determines the working hours individually. Your accident insurance will be covered by the provider.
