Apply for admission as a patent attorney

Do you want to work as a patent attorney? Then you must apply for admission to the patent profession with the Chamber of Patent Attorneys.

As a patent attorney, you are authorized in particular to perform the following tasks:

• to advise on inventions, patents, utility models, trademarks, designs, topographies, or plant variety rights;
• register industrial property rights;
• Enforcing intellectual property rights where legal representation by lawyers is not required;
• Representing your clients before the following institutions:
  • German Patent and Trade Mark Office,
  • Federal Patent Court,
  • Federal Plant Variety Office,
  • Federal Court of Justice in nullity proceedings.

You must apply for your admission with the Chamber of Patent Attorneys. The Chamber of Patent Attorneys will review your application. If you meet all the requirements, you will be issued a certificate of admission and you may work as a patent attorney.

You submit the application for admission as a patent attorney by mail to the Chamber of Patent Attorneys:

• Visit the website of the Chamber of Patent Attorneys and download the application form and the questionnaire.
• Print out both documents, enter all the information requested herein in each of them, and sign both documents by hand.
• Send the application for admission, the questionnaire, and the required documents by mail to the Chamber of Patent Attorneys.
• The Chamber of Patent Attorneys is checking whether you meet all the requirements for admission.
• If the examination result is positive, you will receive an invitation to the personal swearing-in ceremony. This takes place at the office of the Chamber of Patent Attorneys in Munich.
• After taking the oath, you will receive a certificate of admission. From that point on, you may use the professional title "patent attorney.".

With your admission, you are a member of the Chamber of Patent Attorneys and, after taking your oath, will be entered in the electronic directory of patent attorneys.
