Apply for exemption from compulsory insurance in the statutory pension insurance scheme for members of professional pension institutions

Are you a mandatory member of a professional occupational pension institution? Then you can apply to be exempt from compulsory insurance in the statutory pension insurance scheme.

Professional pension institutions, also known as Versorgungswerke, are special mandatory social security systems. They ensure mandatory coverage for members of regulated liberal professions regarding old-age, disability, and survivor benefits. These include, for example:

• Female and male physicians,
• Lawyers,
• Tax consultants and tax agents.

Exemption from compulsory insurance in the statutory pension insurance scheme in favor of this provision is only possible under certain conditions. To achieve this, you must be a compulsory member of an occupational pension institution due to your employment and at the same time a compulsory member of an occupational chamber. For other employment or activities subject to compulsory insurance, exemption is only possible in exceptional cases.

You must apply in writing for exemption from mandatory insurance in the statutory pension insurance scheme through the occupational pension institution.

• Use the application form of your occupational pension institution. You can request it directly from them or download it from their website.
• Send the completed application form together with any required documents to your professional pension institution.
• This confirms your mandatory membership in the professional chamber and the pension scheme on the application form. Afterwards, it forwards the application to the German Federal Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund).
• The German Federal Pension Insurance Fund will decide on your application. You will receive a notice from them.

The exemption takes effect from the date the requirements are met if you submit the application within 3 months. Otherwise, it is effective from the receipt of the application. An exemption for the past is only possible within the three-month period.
