Quick info

If your child is chronically ill or their health is at risk, they may receive medical rehabilitation benefits from the pension insurance.

Description

Medical rehabilitation serves to treat health and functional disorders. Its purpose is to restore or improve your child's health and performance so that they can fully participate in school and leisure activities again. The long-term goal: to enable your child to be employable in the future.

You must apply for the measure in advance with the German Pension Insurance. The type of treatment and selection of the rehab facility depend on your child's individual symptoms. The therapy takes place in a rehab facility of the pension insurance or in one of its contract clinics.

Children's rehabilitation is available as an inpatient, full-day outpatient, or outpatient program and generally lasts at least 4 weeks. If it appears medically necessary, it can also be extended.

The pension insurance covers the following costs:

  • Costs for the rehabilitation of your child, for example for
    • medical,
    • therapeutic and
    • educational services
  • Travel expenses
  • in inpatient pediatric rehabilitation: costs for accommodation and board
  • potentially costs for an accompanying person

To ensure that schoolchildren miss as little learning material as possible, they receive accompanying instruction during rehabilitation if regular school attendance is not possible.

You can accompany your child for the duration of the rehabilitation if this is necessary for the implementation or success of the children's rehabilitation. As a rule, this is the case if your child is under 12 years old.

Children are not only considered to be your biological children. If you are insured in the pension insurance scheme or are already receiving a pension, children taken into your household or predominantly supported by you can also

  • Stepchildren and foster children as well
  • Grandchildren or siblings

receive a children's rehabilitation. Children who receive an orphan's pension can also get children's rehabilitation.

You cannot receive a medical rehabilitation for your child if

  • you are a civil servant, a soldier, or a judge, or receive a pension,
  • your child is entitled to a similar benefit from another rehabilitation provider due to a work-related accident, an occupational disease, or injury caused by third parties, for example from accident insurance,
  • your child is a civil servant or a soldier, or
  • your child is in pre-trial detention or is serving a prison sentence.
