Patents and intellectual property

  • Intellectual property rights

    Here you will find information on your rights and obligations regarding business formation, management, and closure, in particular regarding the registration of patents, utility models, trademarks, and designs.

  • Submit product information texts

    As a pharmaceutical company, you must submit the product information texts to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) via a specialist application after completion of the procedure. The texts will be published.

  • Apply for plant variety protection

    You apply for plant variety protection for a newly discovered or bred plant variety at the Federal Plant Variety Office (Bundessortenamt - BSA).

  • Register a trademark

    Signs used to distinguish the goods and services of one enterprise from those of other enterprises can be protected as a trademark at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA). 

  • Renew trademark

    When the term of protection of your trademark expires, you can renew the protection. 

  • File a search request for a preliminary assessment of the patentability of a patent application

    If you want a rough assessment of whether your invention for which a patent has been applied for is new and inventive before filing the examination request, you can submit a request for a search.

  • Examination for patentability

    With patents, you can protect your technical inventions against unwanted imitation. To assess the patentability of your invention, the process from the application to the request for examination and the possible grant of a patent is described here.  

  • File a patent

    Technical inventions that are new, inventive, and industrially applicable can be protected as a patent at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA). 

  • Consult the DPMA register

    If you need information on the current legal and procedural status of patents, utility models, or trademarks, you can conduct online searches using the "DPMAregister" service.

  • Register design

    New and original designs can be protected as a registered design at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA).
