Apply for accreditation of radon measurements at the workplace

If you wish to provide and evaluate devices for statutory mandatory measurements of radon activity concentration at workplaces, you must obtain recognition for this from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS).

The Radiation Protection Act regulates the workplaces in Germany where the radon activity concentration must be measured on a mandatory basis. Such an obligation exists in radon-prone areas for workplaces in the basement or ground floor, as well as nationwide in work areas already known for elevated radon concentrations, such as waterworks, mines, or radon healing galleries. The responsible state authorities can also order measurements at other workplaces.

Providers who wish to perform the legally required measurements of radon activity concentration at these workplaces must obtain recognition for this from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). This recognition serves to ensure the quality of the measurements.

The documents and evidence submitted together with the application for recognition are examined by the BfS. If the requirements are met, the provider is recognized. The recognition is subject to a fee and is granted for an indefinite period. However, it can be revoked or withdrawn if the requirements cease to be met. The recognition is not transferable.

You can apply for recognition as a body for measuring radon activity concentration at workplaces online or by email to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). You should clarify in an initial discussion with the BfS whether there are any potential reasons that could prevent recognition.

Submit application online:

• Go to the website of the federal portal verwaltung.bund.de and access the online application.
  • Note: To submit the application online, you need an ELSTER My Business Account.  
• Complete the electronic application form in full. The online application guides you step by step through the required information and necessary documents.
• Upload the required documents as a file (PDF, DOC, JPG, PNG, maximum 10 megabytes per file). The form will indicate whether the attachments are complete.
• Submit the application electronically.
• You will receive a confirmation of receipt.
• The BfS will review the submitted documents and contact you if there are any questions or if further documents are required. You will be granted a period of 4 weeks to answer the questions or submit additional attachments. Once your application has been supplemented, the BfS will continue the review.
• The BfS sends you
  • a notice of recognition as a body for the measurement of radon activity concentration at the workplace pursuant to section 155 paragraph 4 of the Radiation Protection Ordinance or a notice of rejection as well as
  • a cost assessment notice.
• You pay the costs.
• The BfS publishes your recognition on its website.

Submit an application by email:

• Go to the BfS website and download the "Application for recognition as a body for measuring the radon-222 activity concentration in air in indoor workplaces" there.
• Print out the application form and fill it out completely.
• Sign the application and scan it.
• Send your application with all required documents by email to the BfS.
• You will receive a confirmation of receipt.
• The further steps correspond to the procedure for the online application.

If your application is rejected, you can submit a new application as soon as the requirements are met.

The recognition notice is valid indefinitely.
