Apply for a data transmission block for your data stored in the Central Register of Foreigners

If you are registered in the Central Register of Foreigners, you can apply under certain conditions to have your data withheld from disclosure.

If you live in Germany as a foreigner for more than 90 days, your personal data will be kept in a central register for foreigners. From this, public authorities can obtain information about you.

Under the legal prerequisites, non-public bodies, authorities of other states, and supranational or international bodies can also receive data from the Central Register of Foreigners.

You can apply for a restriction on the transmission of your personal data if you see a danger to yourself or your relatives. The data will be restricted if:

• your legitimate interests or those of another person may be prejudiced by the transmission of the data or
• upon request of the witness protection service.

Blocked data is subject to a transmission block. It may only be transmitted in exceptional cases (without your statement) to non-public bodies, authorities of other states, or intergovernmental bodies.

If there is an overriding public interest, the block is also effective against authorities. How long the block remains in effect depends on the individual case.
 

You can apply for the restriction of data transmission from the Central Register of Foreigners in writing or in person:

If you apply for the transmission block in person:

• Contact your competent immigration office to find out which documents you need. Make an appointment if necessary.
• During your appointment, a staff member will listen to you to understand the reasons for your request. A decision will then be made regarding your application.
• You will then receive a written notification. If your application is approved, the data transmission block will apply with immediate effect. .  

If you apply for the transmission block in writing:

• Contact your competent immigration office to find out which application form and what additional documents you need. If there is no application form, a signed informal application is sufficient.
• Submit your application and the required documents to your immigration authority, the Central Register of Foreigners, or the branch office of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees responsible for processing your asylum application.
• After review of your application and your documents, you will receive a written notification. If your application is approved, the data transmission block will apply with immediate effect.

Note: Transmission blocks can also be stored ex officio in cases of worthy interests requiring protection or overriding public interest. If a transmission block has been stored in the register ex officio, you, as the data subject, will be informed by the authority that decided on the storage.
