Quick info

If you are not legally insured against workplace accidents, you can apply for voluntary insurance. You can change or cancel the insurance at any time.

Description

Statutory accident insurance protects you against work-related and commuting accidents as well as occupational diseases. As an entrepreneur or self-employed or voluntary worker, you are generally not covered by statutory accident insurance. However, you can take out voluntary insurance.

This also applies to

  • assisting spouses (wives and husbands) or registered partners who are not employed in the company,
  • Persons who act like an entrepreneur. These are persons who in capital or partnerships (GmbH, KG, GmbH & Co. KG):
    • either as a managing shareholder with a stake of at least 50 percent in the company's share capital or, in accordance with the provisions of the articles of association, are able to prevent all resolutions by other shareholders
    • or as working shareholders without executive functions who hold a stake of more than 50 percent in the company's share capital, or who, in accordance with the provisions of the company agreement, are able to block all resolutions of other shareholders.

There are cases where business owners are statutorily insured against accidents. Volunteers can also be compulsorily insured in certain cases, for example in the healthcare sector. If this applies to you, you can take out additional insurance. This allows you to adapt the benefits in the event of a claim to your personal needs.

The statutory accident insurance institutions regulate the details of the insurance, such as contributions and the calculation of cash benefits.

If you have voluntary insurance in this sense or have taken out supplementary insurance, you can change the sum insured at any time.

The statutory accident insurance institutions set the upper and lower limits of the insured sum. The chosen insured sum should correspond to your actual income situation. It forms the basis for calculating contributions and cash benefits such as injury allowance and pensions.

The insurance starts on the day after your application is received by your trade association or accident insurance institution.

An application is required to apply for, change, or terminate voluntary insurance or supplementary insurance.

Modification or cancellation is possible at any time.

You can choose the date of termination. If you do not specify a date, the insurance coverage ends with the month in which the termination notice was received by your trade association or accident insurance institution.

Retroactive termination is not possible.

In certain cases, no cancellation is necessary, but rather the voluntary insurance or supplementary insurance expires automatically, for example in the case of

  • unpaid contributions,
  • Change of professional association or accident insurance fund,
  • Company attitude,
  • Departure of the insured person from the company or
  • Death of the insured person.
